From the words of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Things are only impossible until they are possible” Wise words of wisdom from Star Trek The Next Generation. Ford has lived and breathed this philosophy now for over one hundred years. Believing if you can conceive it you can achieve it.
Well the impossible has now been conquered. On May 2nd, 2014 the Ford Mustang took to the pony to the final frontier. Yes destination outer space was achieved. On this sunny day in San Francisco- area Ford zone sales manager Michael Sego and Steve Kubitz managing partner of Big Valley Ford in Stockton, California, along with some friends became the first to document a Mustang leaving the earth’s atmosphere.Wanting to celebrate 50 years of the Mustang and the release of the long awaited 2015 pony, Sego and Kubitz wanted to do something special. With the belief that the Mustang has always been about getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road, Sego and Kubitz decided to take it to the open sky.
The journey of the Ford Mustang and the American space program began around the same time. Over the last 50 years we have seen the unimaginable become reality. With Ford Mustang pushing the limits of the driver experience to new heights and taking the personal driving experience into uncharted territory.
Sego and Kubitz achieved this monumental task much like the Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner did in October of 2012. With the use of a custom helium-filled balloon. Sego and Kubitz acquired a high altitude weather balloon. They then added a rod to the side of the instrumentation box that was suspended below it and mounted one of the Revell Mustang model kits. Cameras were also attached to document the historical event.
On May 2nd the pony was launched. Taking 74 minutes from time of the release of the balloon to reach a maximum height of 110,000 feet. Equivalent to 21 miles above the earth’s surface. After reaching this point the GPS location transmitter along with the car and instrumentation box returned to earth surface. Landing in a field with the aid of a parachute, theywere retrieved six hours after lift-off.
Once again the Mustang made history with this to journey into outer space. With the pony reaching all four corners of the globe and loved by millions this was only the next natural step in the evolution of the Mustang experience.
