In 1999, Ford gave the SN95 Mustang a distinct redesign that made the pony car look a lot more aggressive and modern, just in time for the new millenium. It was a design all its own, though the New Edge Mustangs seem to have been largely overlooked in the leadup to the 2015 Mustang debut. The New Edge also brought with it a major update to the 4.6 SOHC engine in the form of better cylinder heads and camshafts. By today’s standards however, the under 300 hp stock New Edge seems almost like an also-ran.
If you really want to add some oomph to your New Edge ‘Stang, you may want to take a page from the book of Calvin Atwell, who commissioned Revolution Automotive to swap a supercharged Coyote V8 into his 2002 Mustang GT. While the car needs a bit more work to make it legal for the times it can run, watching this Mustang rip down the strip in the low 10-second range, run after run is entertaining.
The best run of the day though 9.996 at 130.3 MPH, making this a legit single-digit car. The 5.0 Coyote motor was topped with a VMP supercharger, and while horsepower numbers weren’t laid out, it’s clear that this car may have over 600 hp. Of course this speed is also owed to the fact that the 2002 Mustang came in at just 3,280 pounds, while the 2011+ Mustang weighs almost 400 pounds more. That makes a difference.
This video also highlights the need for a good suspension on a fast car, as this Mustang could have easily cut another half-second or more off its time with a better suspension. Watching the back end of this New Edge Mustang bounce its way off the starting line makes us cringe, though from the sounds of it a new suspension and full-cage setup are already in the works. Once that’s all sorted out, this Mustang should be going deeper into the 9-second zone with good shifting, all day long.
This video has got us thinking the New Edge Mustang might just be the best candidate car yet for a Coyote swap. After all, the engine just drops right in and bolts up without much drama, and if you add a supercharger you potentially have a car capable of single digits, air conditioning, and power seats. What more could you ask for?
