Coming in with an official rating of 662 horsepower and 631 ft-lbs of torque, the 2013 Shelby GT500 is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room. And even that rating might be low, as dyno tests are showing the GT500 making closer to 700 horsepower at the flywheel. Of course the most important number is wheel horsepower, and the new GT500 is ripe for tuning crowd to tinker with.
Evolution Performance brought their shop car to John Lund of Lund Racing. Lund tuned the 2013 Shelby, and was able to eek out even more horsepower with a custom engine tune.
Lund is a well-known tuning heavyweight in his own right, and his magic touch can really bring out the potential of any stock motor. With such a strong foundation to build on, it shouldn’t be surprising that Lund is able to tweak an aggressive tune that goes beyond what even Ford’s engineers were willing to do.
So what kind of magic was Lund able to work? After what we assume was a stock first run that put down 605 wheel horsepower and 584 ft-lbs of torque. After Lund’s tune, the same car made 655 wheel horsepower and 633 ft-lbs of torque, a gain of 50 horsepower and 49 ft-lbs of torque. And that is with just a tune. Wait until these guys start getting into the engine…
