What do you consider to be a lot of horsepower? 400 horsepower seems to be the new starting point for today’s modern American muscle cars, so does 500 horsepower qualify as a lot? How about 600? We think right about 700 is where you go from enough horsepower, to too much (if there is such a thing.) But making 700 horsepower with today’s Ford mod motors is a lot easier than the low-power, two-valve engines that gave birth to the mod family.But it’s still very possible, as this video from Vortech shows. Jake Smith of San Diego, California owns this red 2002 Mustang. With a little work, and a Vortech supercharger, Jake was able to coax over 700 rear-wheel horsepower from his little 2-valve 4.6 V8.
Of course, there were plenty of modifications to go around achieving that kind of horsepower, though Jake did stick with the stock 2-valve heads, which he had ported. He got his camshaft from Bullet Racing, the intake manifold from Edelbrock, and a custom tune running E85 ethanol. At 22 pounds of boost, this setup manage to put down 718 horsepower.Those are impressive numbers for any engine, but especially impressive from a 2-valve 4.6., which was rated at a comparatively paltry 260 horsepower from the factory. That’s almost a 200% power improvement over stock. Sounds nasty too. Coyote 5.0 owners beware, those old 4.6 motors are still plenty potent. You have been warned.
