With the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang fast approaching, many a pony car fan is hoping to get their rides ready for the big celebration. That means perfectly-restored rides and revved-up race cars will all be vying to be a part of the pony car parade. And what better way to tune your ride than taking it out for a fun run on the street?

We came across this video of two superb Mustangs duking it out on an isolated patch of desert highway. While we don’t normally condone street racing, in the case of this 9-second Shelby GT500 and 1,200 horsepower 1996 Mustang Cobra, we can make an exception.

Now we don’t know if this ‘67 Shelby GT500 is the real deal or a replica, though we imagine it is probably a clone given the many modifications. Under the hood is a stroked small-block Ford displacing 440 cubic-inches. Running E85 ethanol and packing two nitrous kits worth another 400 horsepower, this classic Mustang has plenty of giddy-up going for it.

It’s opponent is a 1996 Mustang Cobra with a host of modifications itself. While not as special or as valuable as a real Shelby GT500, the Cobra isn’t a slouch either. Packing two 67mm turbochargers, nitrous, and a fully-built race motor, the video claims that this Cobra packs 1,200 horsepower of Shelby-smashing power. But is it enough to keep up with the Shelby?
