There has been plenty of rumors swirling regarding the future of the Australian automotive market. One car in particular has been on everyone’s mind, the Ford Falcon. Declining sales along with growing fuel economy and emissions standards seemed to all but doom the Falcon, and many Ford enthusiasts were feeling the heat.

But this week at the Australian International Auto Show in Sydney, a teaser video for the next-gen Ford Falcon was played for the crowd. For at least one more generation, the Falcon lives on. But will it share anything in common with the Ford Mustang?

The video above, provided by Performance Drive, does not reveal much but does briefly give the viewers a look at the front end of the new Falcon. Can’t really tell much from the video, given the angle and all, and maybe this is just wishful thinking, but do we detect a resemblance to the Ford Mustang? Then again, the grille area shares quite a bit in common with the grille on the 2013 Ford Fusion. Would Ford dare take the Falcon front-wheel drive?

There has been speculation that the next Falcon could share a chassis with the 2015 Mustang, which is slated to arrive on dealership lots in 2014. The One Ford plan calls for models to use the same architecture across multiple contents to save on parts and tooling, so this could also open the door for a four-door Mustang. Then again, it could be based on the new Fusion, which is front-wheel drive.

Again, just speculation, but Ford has surprised many by keep the Falcon going. Perhaps they realize how important the car is for their brand in Australia, much the same way the Mustang is for America. Maybe Ford wants to market the Fusion in Australia. Things are definitely getting interesting in the Land Down Under.
