Drifting has become an international phenomenon, as has 2010 Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr., one of the many “hoonigans” carving a path of destructive entertainment through motorsports. Even though Gittin hasn’t won a Formula Drift competition so far in the 2013 season, he has managed to snag the points lead by placing on the podium at two consecutive events.
How does he do it? By any means possible as it turns out, as this video from the recent bout in Road Atlanta in Georgia demonstrates. After the lead driver, Fredric Aasbo, misjudged his entry angle, Gittin was left with two options; drive off the course, or over his competitor. Which option do you think he chose?
If you picked option B., going over his competitor, you guessed correctly. While against the rules, and costing Gittin any actual competition points for the run, this little move is worth a whole lot of street cred and cool factor points. It was a split-second decision Gittin made that saw his front wheel go over his competitor’s hood, but what choice did he have?
He could have gone off course or driven into the back of his competitor’s car, but that wouldn’t have been any better. As it was, Gittin tore the front fascia off of the other car, leaving it in the middle of the track before taking the lead position. Were this actual racing, and not just drifting, he might have taken the checkered flag or perhaps a black flag.
Instead though, Gittin came in third place at Road Atlanta, which earned him enough points to take the lead in the points standing for now. While this stunt may not win him any points, it earned him a place in our octane-fueled heart.
