It has been a long road towards reconstruction for NMRA True Street competitor Chris Escobar, but his ride is finally back in action. Escobar took a few years off to completely reconstruct his car with the help of Jake LaMotta from LaMotta Performance. We wrote about him way back in 2012, as he was in the middle of the project.
The car in its previous twin-turbocharged incarnation was good for a whopping 11 NMRA and NMCA True Street victories, and Escobar undertook the changes with the intent of retaining his dominance in the class. A brand-new 25.5-spec chassis was done by Hector at Quality Chassis Shop in Florida, featuring a Strange Engineering 9-inch rearend and suspension parts from longtime sponsor UPR.
Power comes from a Kris Starnes-built Coyote engine and a pair of Garrett GTX turbochargers running on a Quality Chassis Shop-fabricated turbo system. Turbosmart wastegates, blowoff valves, and boost controller help to manage the turbo system. Escobar relies on a transmission from Dynamic Racing Transmissions along with quality parts from many other suppliers. The car is tuned by Brian Macy at Horsepower Connection.
Braking is provided by one of Baer Brakes‘ Deep Stage Drag Race brake systems. The front kit includes their S4 calipers and drilled and slotted brake rotors along with Hark Performance brake pads. The rear kit is a dual-caliper design that is designed specifically for drag racing applications. It serves Escobar well when trying to hold back the twin-turbocharged beast on the starting line.
In his first event out with the news car this past weekend at the NMRA World Finals, he finished in second place in the True Street class, while turning in a quickest-ever pass of 8.05 at 171 MPH. A fine showing for the Florida resident, and we can only imagine how quick he’ll be with some seat time in the newly-reconstructed machine.
