The Holcomb Motorsports Civil Wars is planned as a Mustang shootout, hence the name, but it turned out to be run-what-you-brung bracket race filled with everything, including a Hog Wild Chevy Vega, a Fox body missing paint, a Good ol’ Charlie Brown ’65 Bel-Air Wagon, and a clean turquoise ’65 Stang tubbed ‘street car’ (well, at least it had tags on it).

Between running the 1/4 mile and the 1/8th mile clocks, the weekend held the spectators’ attention with a huge variety of cars and classes. It was easy to tell you were in the deep south, as almost half of the cars were rough but fast.

The headlining class consisted of the 10.5 Holcomb Motorsports Outlaw cars. Holcomb Motorsports, based out of Lumberton, NC, is a small shop with a big inventory of all Ford performance products. Founded by Kenny and Lisa Holcomb in the early 1990s, Holcomb is a shop that epitomizes the down home North Carolina speed shop.

Their slogan? “We ain’t fancy….just friendly.”

Holcomb has been organizing the event for over ten years now, and it gets better every year. With a high turnout this year, the event is still holding strong. There were close to a dozen pickup truck vendors on the hillside next to the track. The car show on Saturday had a poor turnout, but a few cars worth stopping to check out, such as the ’65 Galaxie 500 in full ’60s nostalgia race gear. Sponsors and vendors, including Hole Shot Wheels, had set up beside the pits. Hole Shot, a title sponsor of the King of the Street series, was there passing out t-shirts and showing off their high-end drag wheels.

The King of the Street series, a local up-and-coming 1/8 mile series in North Carolina, ran wide open with twenty-six entries this past weekend. The series is aimed at street cars only, although it is hard to believe that some of the cars are streetable. Take, for instance, the turquoise ’65 Stang owned by Don Bryant. When I referred to it as a drag car, Bryant quickly laughed and said, “That’s a street car! Look at the tags on the bumper.” Bryant was knocked out quickly on Sunday afternoon, after sending a fireball underneath the car on the far end of the track and losing all power for a short second.

The series has four classes: Mickey Thompson Heads Up drag racing, Qwik Time Performance 5.95, Nitrous Express 6.95, and Ultimate Street. King of the Street rules mandate that the cars must have working lights and upholstered interiors, they forbid the use of wheelie bars, and only single stages of nitrous (for the nitrous class) are allowed. This class makes for some great good ol’ fashion type of racing. Check out their site at www.king-of-the-streets.orgfor more information about the series and what it is all about.

Don’s Clean ’65 was out early with a fireball under the car at the tall end of the track.

The headliners, 10.5 Holcomb Outlaws, started eliminations on Sunday, with a $5,000 purse for the winner. The first round of eliminations started on what turned out to be a far cloudier day than expected. No rain fell until the ride home, but plenty of clouds caused uneasy feelings about how things would shake down. The first round of eliminations broke down like this:

This ’70 Model made close to 100 passes in the weekend.

Brad Brand’s ’92 black Stang from Loganville, GA ran a straight 4.474 at 180.62mph with a .069 reaction time. Brand’s time beat out the orange and white SS ’69 Camaro owned by Michael Martin from Gloucester, VA, who ran a 5.443 at 95.40mph after falling asleep on the tree with a .155 reaction time.

Also in the semi-finals was a black on black run with Tim Lynch’s black 2000 Mustang, from Woodstock, GA (not NY). Lynch ran a 4.403 at 184.62mph. His run knocked out Danny Lowry and his ’98 black Stang, which ran a 4.532 at 177.28mph.

The 10.5 Outlaws final elimination round was a tight race between two black Stangs, a 2000 and a ’93 GT. Lynch (in the 2000) ran a 4.39 at 183.89mph. Brand ran a quicker reaction time of .061, but finished the run with a 4.662 at 148.02mph.

Lynch was the fastest all weekend, with the lowest E.T. and fastest speed on Saturday (4.389.22 E.T. and 183.77mph). The slightly cooler temperatures on Sunday made for slightly slower times than Saturday. Lynch had the fastest time and speed on Sunday as well, with a 4.389.22 E.T. finals run and 184.62mph on a different pass. Keith Jackson, from Bennettsville, SC, ran his ’67 CHEVY II and had the best reaction time with .058 on Sunday.

The weekend was filled with all of the classes, such as the TCI index bracket races, PA Outlaw Top Street and the Sportsman Foot Brake. One 1970 Orange Mach 1 Stang with a high front and sponsored vinyls ran almost 100 times in the weekend, between his index class and footbrake.

The Open Comp class, sponsored by Edelbrock, ran the 1/4 mile clocks with a $1000 purse on Saturday and a $500 purse on Sunday, along with Semi-Final pay out and buy backs. The Heads up Super Series Pro Tree Eliminators drew a diverse crowd of cars with their class. The Classic Gear Gammers drew in Gassers and retro rods like the Good ol’ Charlie Brown ’65 Bel-Air Wagon.
