Green lights are meant for going, yellow lights are meant for slowing and red lights are made for stopping, at least to the majority of the population. Unfortunately, in the last few months, we’ve seen an influx of individuals running red lights and causing major accidents in the process. It is with sadness that we report yet another one of these incidents, one in which a Mustang was ripped in half resulting in one fatality and serious injuries, according to CBS8 and U-T San Diego.
The accident occurred in Carlsbad, California at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Calle Barcelona on Monday night, February 24th around 10 p.m. According to Carlsbad Police Lt. Pete Pascual, the driver of a late-model Buick Sedan was heading south on Rancho Sante Fe Road when he ran a red light, colliding with a red fourth-generation Mustang and ripping it in half.
According to witness statements, the driver of the Buick, a 33-year-old male, was speeding southbound when he came in contact with the Mustang, which was attempting to make a left-hand turn from Calle Barcelona onto northbound Rancho Santa Fe Road.
Due to the severity of the accident, the 20-year-old driver, who has not been officially identified to the public by police (although commenters to both publication’s news feeds have identified the man by his first name) died at the scene even after witnesses and emergency personnel administered CPR and trying other life-saving procedures.
The driver of the Buick was severely injured in the accident and was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla .
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident and trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors. Once the investigation has been concluded, charges may be brought against the driver of the Buick.
Our thoughts go out to all those tied to this tragic accident and hope that through this tragedy, more eyes are opened to the dangers of reckless choices behind the wheel.
