Among the waves of Mustang and Shelby rumors whirling around the Internet, something finally emerges with a purported ‘source’ attached to it. Speculation is fine, but when it lapses into nothing more than wishes dressed up as news, things get tiring pretty quickly.
So, the folks over at Motor Authority say they have information from a trusted source “source close to the Mustang project” that addresses a few recent open topics of discussion. First is that the GT500 is not going to get a twin turbo setup, but will beat the Camaro Z1L power level nonetheless. C’mon… did you really, really believe that Ford was going twin turbo on the 5.0 engine just a couple of years after introduction?
Beyond this, the timing of the next Mustang appears to have reverted to an earlier thought, which would see it launched in 2014 as a 2015 model. Ford missed launching the S197 Mustang in time for the 40th Anniversary, so they’ll likely move Heaven and Earth to get the next Mustang ready, ideally, for April 16, 2014.
When it comes to the Camaro ZL1 and the Shelby GT500, both Ford and Chevrolet should be nervous about breaking the 600 HP level. This just might be enough to spook the insurance companies into doing something untoward. Somehow, our current herd of pony cars has survived gas price pressures, but could it withstand some ludicrous increases in insurance premiums? That was the second main factor that killed off the muscle car movement in the 1970’s and, frankly, it could do it again.
