Call us cynical, but it may be no coincidence that Steve Saleen’s SMS Moorcars has released a commercial for their SMS 302 Mustang just as Saleen Performance Vehicles, of Troy, MI, is winding down production of Saleen-branded Mustangs once and for all.
If you need a guide to the players and plots, check out this article from earlier this year. After retiring from the company that bears his name, Steve Saleen formed SMS Supercars in Irvine, CA. His first product announcement was the SMS570 Dodge Challenger.
Announcements followed later for SMS-modified versions of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang. The company has since began offering a private branded supercharger, as well as setting up a parts operation, SMS Superparts.
Meanwhile, back at Saleen Performance Vehicles in Troy, the only model produced this year is the 2011 S302 which adds a performance exhaust, Saleen Racecraft suspension and styling updates. Once the final orders are filled (if they haven’t been already), SPV will become a parts-only operation, under the Speedlab name.
While there is no shortage of tuners willing to sell you their special edition Mustangs, few have the street creds to match Steve Saleen. If he has plans to take on the Mustang market again, we welcome him back. Somehow, we get a feeling that this is probably not the end of this particular story.
