The Texas Mile is a top-speed event held a couple of times a year at the Chase Industrial and Airport Complex in Beeville, Texas. The challenging event tests man and machine in a grueling, standing-start, one-mile timed run on an airstrip, with a number of different classes and rulesets. There are three classes – Street Legal, Not Street Legal, and Exhibition Vehicle, with many different ‘speed breaks’ to achieve, and the quickest competitors are shooting for the elusive 200MPH mark. Speeds are calculated at each of the four quarter-mile timing stations.
Not only can you run a real street car at the Mile, there are also a multitude of classes for motorcycles and land-speed-record vehicles. The challenge to break 200MPH in a real street car is one that a number of competitors have attempted over the years. While many have attempted the feat, many others have returned home to continue planning their next assault on the concrete – the double-dollar is no easy task, even in a mile – you have to have your gearing, your power level and tire sizes correct to ensure that you can even get there in the given real estate.
We caught this great video of Tyler Garcia’s supercharged 1990 Mustang taking his shot at the mile. The well-produced video includes a number of different camera angles including the in-car shot and ever-popular behind-the-rear-tire view. Garcia’s ‘Stang is a machine making plenty of power, as you can hear him struggling to keep the tires glued down in a couple of gears on his way to over 210 MPH within 5,280 feet. The other challenging thing at the mile is to bring the car to a stop within the prescribed half-mile shutdown – the reason you see the big parachute on the back. Enjoy the vid!
