This past weekend speed freaks from every corner of the country converged on the Lonestar Motorsports Park for the bi-annual TX2K13 event, a contest of speed and power and not much else. While plenty of imported powerhouses showed up for the event, it was once again up to the domestic muscle cars to show those tuner boys how to make some real power.
While there were many amazing videos coming out of TX2K13 this week, one that really caught our eye was this video of a 2003 Mustang Cobra on the dyno. It laid down an astounding 1,222 horsepower on the dyno thanks to a unique engine setup…and a whole lot of cajones.
While the stock 2003 Mustang Cobra came with a supercharged 4.6-liter V8, Cobra owners have been replacing the supercharger with turbochargers almost since day one. JMS Racing was given the job to replace the whole shabang – engine included with a new 5.0 engine and two PTE 6766 turbochargers.
The result is that at about 27 pounds of boost, this Cobra can lay down more than 1,200 horsepower at the wheels. That’s a gnarly amount of power, and was the biggest horsepower number laid down all weekend, taking home the first place prize for most power. What that translated to on the drag strip, we don’t know, as we’ve been unable to find any movies of this Cobra in action. But we assume it’s nigh unbeatable with that kind of power…and in a street car, no less!
