Carroll Shelby left an indelible mark on the auto industry, and his passing, while not unexpected, still sent a jolt through the aftermarket. But with all the condolences said, the world is moving forward, and now it falls on a small team of executives to keep the dream of Carroll Shelby alive. But in a rapidly changing world, how does one keep a brand alive that was so closely tied with its patriarch?
A recent piece in Automotive News takes a look the future of Shelby. The one thing that stuck out most to us though was the mention of Shelby embracing Ford’s EcoBoost engines. Yup, Shelby is going turbo.
Carroll Shelby reportedly told Shelby American President John Luft “Goddamnit, keep Shelby alive!” on his deathbed. That certainly adds some weight to the job, but Luft seems up to the task. He told Automotive News that Shelby will unveil new models in January at the Detroit Auto Show that will help carry the Shelby legacy forward.
Even cooler though was the mention of Shelby embracing Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology. Ford and Shelby have grown closer and closer over the years, and the company seems ready to tie itself to Ford’s turbocharged baby. But with the twin-turbo Cobra Jet on display at SEMA, we don’t expect that to mean downsized engines any time soon.
Even without Carroll himself at the helm, it looks like the Shelby brand will be just fine going forward.
