The MT-82 transmission that has been used in the the Mustang GT and V6 models since 2011 has not been without some controversy. With the exception of the GT500’s Tremec TR6060 transmission Ford has rarely installed what enthusiasts would consider a strong transmission in the Mustang.

MT-82 issues have ranged from clunky or grinding gears, to a complete inability to shift when the vehicle and outside temperature are cold. We’ve even heard of complaints with regard to clutch pedal issues that Ford says were related to the bolts that secure the pressure place to the flywheel.

This week photos have surfaced of the inside of the 2015 SVT or GT350 Mustang. This is a car that Ford has yet to even acknowledge the existence of, instead they’ve repeatedly directed us to the official Mustang lineup. We have no idea yet what will power this car, nor do we know any more specifics on it.

Among the spy photos that have surfaced are enlargements of the gear shift. the knob on this shifter shows the MT-82 gear pattern rather than the pattern of the Tremec TR6060 that was used in the Shelby GT500. Since this is a prototype car we have no idea whether this shift knob is simply there to throw off spy photographers, if it was just a parts-bin spare that was thrown onto this car so there’d be a shift knob to hold on to, etc.

Should a Tremec transmission be in the next SVT/GT350?

Ford has said they have remedied the issues with the MT-82, and we’ve seen reports indicating an improved version of the Getrag built transmission is coming to the 2015 Mustang lineup. If the MT-82 is indeed slated for the GT350/SVT Mustang then that could indicate a much lower horsepower rated car than the outgoing GT500.

We won’t know for sure until Ford releases details on the car which rumor has it could be as early as next month.
