Sometimes a few bad apples can spoil the whole bunch. Thanks to the reckless behaviour of event participants, the future of Mustang Week in Horry County, SC could be in question. Several incidents have occurred at the annual event in the past, but videos documenting reckless behavior have gained the attention of the Horry County Public Safety Board after going viral on various social media platforms.
The videos in question showed Mustang drivers doing burnouts on public streets in close proximity to pedestrians and other motorists. One video in particular documented a crash by the Myrtle Beach Mall. The driver lost control while showboating, careening over a median and into oncoming traffic.
Brent Schulz, a Horry County Council Member as well as the Horry County Public Safety Board Chairman, has said that the county will look into stricter permitting regulations should event organizer Rodney Melton wish to continue the event. “There were some serious concerns over wrecks and drag racing where people could have been killed,” said Schultz, “We don’t want to deter them from holding the event, but we want to ensure the safety of the public and that participants are acting responsibly.”
Mustang Week organizer Rodney Melton has been cooperating with the safety board and stressed that he and his fellow organizers do not condone such behavior either. “We want to let everyone know that we share their concerns,” saying “We want people to come down and have a good time but we don’t want anyone to get hurt, so we’re going to do whatever it takes to make it safer for everyone.”
Now in its 13th year, Mustang Week draws over 3,000 cars and 11,000 attendees over the course of the week. When asked about the future of the event, Melton was optimistic, “This is the largest event of its kind in the country so I don’t see it stopping,” he then added “We have a few hurdles to overcome but we are committed to working with the County on safety.”
Dates for next year’s Mustang Week have been set for July 13-19, 2015. For more details, visit the Mustang Week web-site.
