Last week with much excitement, the all new GT350 debuted. While Ford wouldn’t divulge tons of details about the car, the most exciting part was the 8,200 RPM redlining engine, (which Ford has yet to confirm even though we saw the tach in the car). The new Voodoo mill will make over 500 hp according to Ford, although we’re hoping that number is north of 550.
This week a bit of news has broken via Road and Track, and Motor Authority, that says Ford is gearing up for another debut in Detroit with the the reveal of the GT350R. This would follow suit with the badge’s historic racing legacy, as Shelby built two versions of the car during the 1960s, with the R version being for competition use only.
According to the reports, the R version would be the racier version of the GT350, possibly similar to the Cobra R of over a decade ago, or even the BOSS Laguna Seca of recent memory. The reports indicate that the car could feature better aero, (we’re thinking wing and chin spoiler), as well as more aggressive brakes (carbon ceramic?). There’s also talk of even stickier rubber, than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports that Ford says were created specifically for the GT350.
We’d expect to see a few chassis stiffening measures like some sort of X-brace, and maybe even some more weight reducing features, like more Carbon Fiber, a deleted rear seat, and even the use of other exotic materials throughout the car. More power hasn’t been mentioned, but the Laguna Seca didn’t need it and Ford may be convinced that the GT350R doesn’t either.
The car is rumored to be making its debut at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit in January. Of course there’s been no official word from Ford yet, in the form of an announcement, or teasers. The blue oval waited until two weeks prior to the GT350 reveal to start those, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of teaser right after the first of the year.
We have our own wishlist for what the R model will bring to the track, what’s yours?
