We often come across incomplete racing videos on YouTube that will either show the highlights, lowlights, and whatever wacky incident warranted its uploading. But we don’t often get a chance to see an entire race from start to finish from inside the cockpit.

Perhaps that is what grabbed us about this next video, which Jalopnik was tipped off to. The video is on-board a 1970’s Camaro dirt track racer, and shows not just how crazy the ride is, but how teamwork factors into a race series like this.

The video is almost eight-minutes long, and it’s a hairy ride the whole way through. No music, no narrator, just the roar of engines and the rattling of old bodys as they slip and slide their way across the track. It is amazing how much time these guys spend driving sideways, as the multiple camera views show. This is how drifting got started, not a bunch of Japanese guys with a big hill and too much time on their hands.

Watching the driver, Jared Thompson, wrestle with his steering wheel in every corner is especially intense, though eventually Thompson surrendered the lead to teammate “Flyin’ Mo.” It is then up to Thompson to hold offer two other competitors to give Mo a chance to take home the checkered. The action doesn’t slow down for a single second, and the sheer rawness of this video makes it worth watching.
