For the fourth year running, Ford has created a one-off Mustang for auction at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Airventure event at the end of this month. Auction proceeds go to support the organization’s youth program, Young Eagles. The program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane.
This year’s Mustang carries a Blue Angels theme and is based on a 2012 Mustang GT. A Ford Racing supercharger has jumped the output to 624 hp, balanced out by handling and braking system upgrades. Mustang chief nameplate engineer Dave Pericak, design manager Melvin Betancourt and Mustang chief designer Darrell Behmer all had a hand in the special design.
The custom rear spoiler’s vertical tail fins, the screaming yellow gloss accents, inclusion of the Blue Angels script and crest all are drawn from the Navy aircraft. The unique chrome blue paint, comes courtesy of Creations n’ Chrome and is unlike anything available on a production vehicle anywhere in the world.
Blue Angels crests are embroidered into the leather Recaro racing seats and the interior also features offset stripes, inspired by the pilot’s flight suits.
Many unique additional details to the Blue Angels Mustang include: updated instrument cluster graphics, performance gauges, navigation screen images, seat belt fabric, instrument panel appliqués, rear seat delete and cross-brace, Blue Angels script in the illuminated sill plates and puddle lamps that project jet images when the doors open. Ford is a long time supporter of EAA and the Blue Angels Mustang will be on display inside the Ford Hangar on site throughout the EAA AirVenture event.
