Once upon a time, Ford dominated rally racing with legendary vehicles such as the RS200 and Sierra Cosworth, forever leaving its mark on off-road racing. Today, Ford campaigns Fiesta and Focus rally racers, but we’ve always secretly yearned to watch a Mustang getting down and dirty through the hairpin turns and muddy ruts that make up rally racing. And it looks like we may finally get that chance with the upcoming release of Gran Turismo Sport on the Playstation 4.
In a new trailer and image dump, Gran Turismo Sport has revealed what rally racing a sixth-generation Mustang might look like, as well as teasing other new race cars and events for the upcoming racing simulator.
Donning livery reminiscent of the Group B rally cars of the early 1980s, this sixth-generation Mustang makes a further compelling argument for its entry into a rally racing series. Although an unlikely scenario in the real world, Gran Turismo Sport will let you get your Mustang rally racing kicks over 27 different race tracks. There will be 140 cars in total to play around with, should you get bored of the Mustang, and a two-player split screen mode will take players back to the 1990s, when “multiplayer” had nothing to do with the Internet. It’s also worth noting that the Group B rally Mustang is part of a pre-order bonus pack.
Speaking of multiplayer, Gran Turismo Sport will ship with a series of online racing championships certified by the FIA, the only video game in the world that can claim this. Just what that means for virtual drivers, we can’t yet say, but being able to race in officially sanctioned contests without investing six-figures into a legit race car is a pretty compelling reason to pay $60 for the new Gran Turismo.
That, and a rally Mustang of course.
