There is little doubt that Ford was swinging for the bleachers when designing the 2011 Mustang models. In particular, the Shelby GT500 defined a new level of performance, sophistication and achievement in automotive design. The marketplace has been quick to recognize this and demand for the 550-HP snake is relentless.

According to recent Ford information, over 3,300 orders have been received for the GT500, almost two-thirds of the 5,500 unit limit for 2011.
“We are pleased with the pace of retail orders for the 2011 Shelby GT500,” commented Fritz Wilke, Mustang brand manager. “The car continues to be popular with sports car enthusiasts and collectors who are blown away by the increase in horsepower and performance. The limited production of the 2011 should make this year even more desirable.”
With a new all-aluminum block engine, the car has shed over 100 pounds from the front end. While delivering more horsepower, fuel economy is also improved to the point that the GT500 is no longer subject to “gas guzzler” taxes.
An out-of-the-park hit with buyers is the glass roof panel, available for the first time this year on the GT500. The uptake rate on this option is said to be three times that for regular Mustang buyers. Similarly, over two thirds of new GT500 orders are including the SVT Performance Pack. Working with Goodyear engineers, SVT helped to define the all-new Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires that are included, along with lighter, staggered-size wheels (19″ front, 20″ rear), revised suspension and lower ride height.
Some are suggesting that Mustang’s 2011 model year represents the third renaissance in Ford performance. If you’re thinking that a GT500 would look best in your own driveway, it would be wise to get a move on. The gold rush is here.
