Every aftermarket shop in the U.S. that has any interest in modern Mustangs is busy cranking out their own special version of the 2011 Mustang 5.0. There are as many different paths to making power with the new 5.0 Mustang as there are Mustangs out there. Some people are trying to make power all-motor, others are going for turbochargers. Still, the best way to make big power in our eyes is to stick with the tried-and-true supercharger.
Evolution Performance is no stranger to readers of powerTV. Their latest project, a street-driven 2011 supercharged Mustang GT, has all the toppings for a badass muscle machine
The car, a 2011 Mustang GT California Special with a 6-speed automatic transmission (Ford 6R80), looks rather humble on the outside. The exterior is all stock, except for a Roush 7-Bar black grill and a set of 19X9.5” Dark Gunmetal RTR wheels (made by Mustang drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr.). Under the hood though is a host of bolt-on modifications that crank up power quite a bit. To start with, a Ford Racing Performance Part’s Supercharger Tuner kit. This kit comes with the basics needed to supercharge your Mustang. Evolution Performance included their own tune on this particular car, which helps boost power to 560 horsepower at the rear wheels, and 474 ft-lbs of torque.
The supercharger runs at a very reasonable 8.4 lbs. of boost (and Evolution Performance says they may try to crank it up to 11 or 12 lbs if they decided to go for 630 rear-wheel horsepower). In addition to the supercharger, Evolution Performance has also installed a Vortech 123mm carbon fiber cold air intake, American Racing 1 7/8th headers, a Borla cat-back exhaust system, and a Kenne Bell Boost-a-Pump. The only other modification is a 3 ½ inch aluminum driveshaft, which sheds 20 pounds of rotating mass. This is a street-driven car, meant for some fun daily driving, and it just goes to show how much potential remains in the still-untapped 5.0 engine. This car will be raced in the Super Stang and True Street Classes and will be on display in Evolution Performance, Inc’s booth at the upcoming NMRA World Finals in Bowling Green, KY
Evolution Performance also has a 9-second supercharged Mustang 5.0, but we won’t have details on that for a few weeks yet. Good things come to those who wait.
