Need more gear in your 2015+ Mustang? Ford Performance Parts and US Gear now offer new ratios for the Super 8.8 rearend. This beefier rear — based on an iron housing on manual-trans cars and an aluminum carrier on auto cars — requires a Super 8.8 gear set.

This means the modern rearend only accepts a Super 8.8 ring and pinion. Until now, only the factory ratios of 3.55 and 3.73 were available via Ford Performance Parts.
That all changed when the factory’s hot rod division turned to US Gear, a brand of AxleTech International, to manufacture a 4.09 Super 8.8 ring and pinion gear set, which opens up the possibilities for modern Mustang performance enthusiasts.
US Gear offers three new Super 8.8 gear ratios, including a 4.09 ratio available exclusively via Ford Performance Parts. All the new gear sets are available in standard (shown) and Lightning Series finishes.
Lightning Series Benefits
To achieve the Lightning Series gears, US Gear applies an Isotropic Super Finishing process, which uses mechanical and chemical treatments to deliver the following benefits:

• Improves oil retention properties
• Reduces contact and bending fatigue

While the 4.09:1 gear set is exclusive to FPP, US Gear will also offer two other ratios for the Super 8.8 — 3.73:1 and 3.91:1. All three of these gearsets will be offered in a standard finish or the optional Lightning Series superfinish (see sidebar).
