K&N has 3.7 and 5.0 Mustangs covered
Also new from K&N are their V6 and 5.0 Mustang intake kits. While the air box assembly is relatively similar between the two kits, a specially-designed intake pipe completes the routing between the two different engines. A completely enclosed, molded intake box connects to the factory cold air inlet while a carbon fiber cover buttons up the top.
Air intakes are by far the first purchased performance upgrade for any enthusiast. It offers cost-effective horsepower and even a more aggressive growl under the hood. Since it’s such a popular first mod, companies like K&N Filters have to be on top of their game for all new makes and models. New for 2012 is their EcoBoost F-150 and Mustang kits.
The EcoBoost F-150 has been an undeniable hit; boasting over 20mpg while producing plenty of power to tow like a champ. The direct-injected, twin turbo 3.5-liter also responds very well to modifications, including K&N’s new air intake kit. The air intake is a direct bolt on replacement to the factory counterpart. It utilizes all the same mounting locations so nothing has to be cut or modified. K&N touts a 11.05hp and 17.01 lb/ft of torque gain to the wheels.
The intake pipe comes one piece made from injection molded plastic with an integrated mass air flow sensor housing. The air filter element is protected from a black heat shield with rubber weatherstripping to help block out the heat. Vince Pistonetti of K&N says, “We wanted to make sure the overall system and filter was going to be protected from heat soak, so we developed a nice air box around around the filter to act like a heat shield to protect it.”
Among other applications for K&N include many of Ford’s smaller engine lines and sport compacts. K&N rounded the musclecar line with both V6 and 5.0 Mustang kits, which have been estimated to produce over 20hp to the wheels.
