The upcoming Mecum Auction that runs from July 30th through August 2nd is going to put one awesome collection of Classic Mustangs on the block. Outside of the Classic and Supercar world, Mecum is one of the top auction companies, the cars they put on the block are right up there with the rest of the big auction houses. Take, for example the cars that will be auctioned off over this upcoming three-day weekend auction.

Lot S25: A 1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible

Take, for example, Lot S25, a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Convertible (above) . This is a classic example of Carroll Shelby taking an already awesome car and making it more awesome. Although convertibles were pretty popular overall, until 1968 there hadn’t been any Shelby-made convertibles for public consumption (Four 66 GT350s were built for in-house use only). The GT500KR is one of the most sought-after Shelby mustangs ever built. The R-code means the vehicle was equipped with a 335 HP Ram Air 428 CID Cobrajet V8 engine. This one, number 2276, is going to go fast, so get registered today if you aren’t already.

Lot S26: A 1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback

Another Shelby creation, Lot S26 is another 68, this time a hardtop. This 1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback is pristine. There were only 1,058 of these built, so they’re rare. Shelby softened up the suspensions on 68 models over the 67 models. Interior comforts were also being improved for those Ford customers that wanted performance and luxury. This example, number 2454, was lovingly restored in 2014 and the resto even included taking it back to its original Raven Black on Black color palette. However, this was actually a resto-mod. For example, the X-code 390 BB was yanked and a thoroughly massaged 302 was installed in its place.

Lot S27 is a 1968 Mustang GT Fastback.

Lot S27 is a 1968 Mustang GT Fastback (above). The 68 Mustang lineup received a number of changes over the 67, many of which were mandated by safety regulations. This particular edition is a resto-mod. The original X-Coded 390 BB was chucked in favor of a heavily massaged 302.  It’s also got a new suspension and disc brakes.

Lot S28: A 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback

Lot S28 is a beautiful example of a 1970 Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (above). The Boss Mustang was seen as the height of Ford’s pony car production. Quite rare, but extremely popular, Ford’s Bosses were some of the most unique Mustangs produced. The 1970 Bosses were unique for unique for more than just the mechanicals and accoutrements. In a business sense, they should never have been made since 1969 sales numbers were flat. Kar Kraft assigned this unit number 2446 and it was one of only 52 that were produced in Ford’s Grabber Green. It’s also an example of a Boss Mustang with the full “convenience group” which included such items as deluxe seat belts, Philco AM radio, console, and more.

Lot S29: A 1967 Ford Mustang GTA Fastbackastback

Lot S29 (above) is a favorite, simply for the reason that it was introduced the closest to my year of birth. This is a 1967 Mustang GTA Fastback in Yellow over Saddle. This baby is equipped with a 320 HP 390 BB. The ’67 model year saw several modifications and updates over the ’66, both interior and exterior. The interior changes were to make the interiors look more competitive yet luxurious.

These cars simply have to be seen to be believed. Most of them are close to one-of-a-kind finds this late in their lives. Talk to us, which one do you want? Only one?
