One of the most popular modifications to any Mustang is changing up the exhaust. This has probably been popular ever since performance products for the cars started hitting the shelves of sellers back in the 1960s.
The S550 platform, looks to be one of the easiest Mustangs in quite some time to modify the exhaust on. Since the system routes completely under the car, without having to go over the rear axle, there’s less work involved in terms of routing. LateModelRestoration, recently performed an EcoBoost Mustang exhaust upgrade, installing a Ford Performance, Sport Axle Back system on a 2015 Mustang EcoBoost.
They detail the install in the video above, and it looks to be fairly straight-forward, even for the novice. The exhaust kit consists of two mufflers with 4-inch tips, and 2.25-inch mandrel bent tubing. The installation does require removal of the factory mufflers and mid-pipe, as well as cutting off the old mufflers.
Ford Performance includes new clamps that allow the Sport Axle back mufflers to slide onto the existing mid-pipe. The guys at LateModelRestoration, do a great job showing how to perform this installation, and it requires only a few basic tools to complete.
After the installation, they show off how the car sounds before and after externally. While we admit most four-cylinders don’t get us excited, the difference between before and after is very noticeable, and it doesn’t sound bad. On the denote car picked up nearly 7 hp at the rear wheels with this swap, dynoing 240.44 before, and 247.01 after. That’s not bad numbers for just a muffler swap, and further proof that the S550 definitely benefits from an exhaust upgrade.
We’ll be curious to see how much more power tuners can squeeze out of the EcoBoost in the months and years ahead. Whether you’re a V8 fan or an EcoBoost owner, the 2015 Mustang is looking more promising every day, especially with the help of companies like LateModelRestoration.
