For 2008 and 2009 Shelby American offered a very limited number of GT500KR Mustangs to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the legendary, original GT500KR. These cars received upgraded exhaust, and a premium fuel only calibration that used more aggressive timing maps to pull more horsepower from the car. Power jumped from 500 to 540 hp with just these few changes.
Each KR also received special badges, unique wheels, lower springs, and a few other odds and ends that made them stand out from their standard GT500 brothers. The performance upgrades knocked 0-60 times down to 4.3 seconds, and the quarter mile went by in just a tick over 12 seconds at 12.1. These numbers were several tenths faster than the standard GT500, and are still respectable even in today’s world of the 662 hp 2013-14 cars.
With somewhere around 1,700 units built total over the two years of production, the KR is the collector GT500 for this particular generation, with only the Super Snake trumping it for out of the box horsepower or rarity.
That rarity is what makes this ebay find so special, item number 191192261236 is a 2009 GT500 in black, with charcoal stripes. With less than 2,000 miles on it’s odometer, this car hasn’t even been driven enough yet to justify an oil change, and it’s available for sale at a current bid that we think is a steal.
We’ve seen standard GT500s bring over $35k with around 40,000 miles on the clock, so finding this KR with minuscule miles and a relatively low bid of just over $32k seems like a bargain for us given the cars provenance, pedigree, and future collector status.
The only question left is would you drive this bad boy, or would you preserve it for posterity, hoping to one day cash in on it’s rare status?
