Carroll Shelby’s birthday will be celebrated again in Las Vegas at the Shelby Vegas Bash, on January 13-16, 2011. The man that Sports Illustrated named ‘Driver of the Year’ in 1957 is also the world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipients. Never mind what else he has done, with that kind of history, every birthday deserves a bash!
The gathering for Shelby’s 88th birthday is open to Shelby enthusiasts driving any car built by Shelby American, designed by Carroll Shelby, or Ford powered vehicle that is recognized by Team Shelby. Participants will be able to enjoy two open track days at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, in addition to the BAER Brake Speed Stop Challenge, a Poker Run, cruises, a car show at the Shelby headquarters, group meals and more.
Shelby’s involvement with the Mustang began in the early days, when he converted Mustang fastbacks into successful SCCA race cars. Throughout the intervening years, he has brought his drive and enthusiasm to bear on an enormous variety of enterprises including automotive, beef farming and charitable foundation support. Today, the number of vehicles that bear his name is little short of breathtaking.
Online registration for the Shelby Vegas Bash is recommended and can be done at the event web site. Best of all, it’s free to registered participants. Shelby Museum tours will be available, as well as factory tours to see production of the Shelby GT350, GT500 Super Snake and Cobra.
