Classic muscle car restoration is a booming hobby amongst automotive enthusiasts – and a booming business for manufacturers – and parts for modernizing the low-tech components that lack todays technology are a hot commodity to bring yesterdays gems to todays functional standards. The classic 1965 to 1970 Mustangs are a popular restoration subject amongst Ford aficionados, and the factory Bendix power steering units found on them leave a lot to be desired in this day and age of power steering technology and design. These factory boxes used a slave cylinder that in hindsight, was a very poor design that leaked and inhibited road feel.
Fortunately, the folks at Borgeson have just what your classic Mustang needs to upgrade your ride to todays level of performance and control, with their Mustang Power Steering Conversion kits. This kit is a remanufactured modern integral power steering gearbox that provides a true modern power steering feel, feedback, and a sporty 16:1 ratio. The Borgeson gearbox has undergone extensive modifications to become a direct bolt-in for the Mustang, and requires no modifications to the shock tower and bolts directly into the factory mounting location. The conversion kit comes complete with the steering box, a power steering pump, rack joint connection, steering column shaft, and the necessary hoses. These are being offered with either a 1″ or 1-1/8″ sector shaft to fit the original pitman arm.
- 1965-67 model year cars will require a replacement column shaft to use this box, while the 1968-70 models will need the factory column collapsed 1-2″ for clearance. Cars with a factory power steering will need either a drag link adapter or a manual power steering centerlink.
