These days Ford’s advertising arm has been focusing more on social media then on the traditional medium of television. They’ve come up with some pretty clever marketing campaigns, including the Fiesta Movement and the Focus Rally. Still, there is something to be said about those classic Ford commercials that starred our favorite car, the Ford Mustang.
We’ve dug up two retro clips featuring the famous 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1; one a commercial highlighting the sight and sound of the Mach 1, the other featuring a confusing German soldier smoking a cigar.
1969 was the last year for the Mustang GT, which had seen sales waning as the pony car competition stiffened from Chrysler and GM. In its place came the Mach 1 package, which used the new slippery “Sport Roof” body. More than the body style though was the visual flair provided by a flat black hood and spoiler along with the blacked-out grille, hood pins, side scoops, and a whole lot more.
The Mach 1 was a sales success, due in part to the marketing blitz that came in the form of television advertising. This first commercial was straight to the point, with the Mach 1 blitzing across some America desert to fast music looking like a red rocket. The second commercial we don’t get. Maybe it’s the generational divide, but why is there a German dude in a Nazi uniform telling me “I know somezing you don’t know.” While this commercial is a bit more confusing, it also shows off the optional 428 Cobra Jet engine with the Shaker Hood. These two commercials are very different for selling the same automobile, so which one do you prefer?
