Ya know, it is pretty cool being a member of the Mustang club. No matter what model or year Mustang you drive, they are almost universally recognized. While usually a good thing, sometimes a nice Mustang draws attention from the wrong people, and thefts of Mustangs and other muscle cars only seem to be on the rise. That is why it is up to owners to take precautions to protect their cars.
Tampa Bay Online reports that the owner of one Mustang installed a LoJack system in his car and when it was stolen, reported the incident to Tampa police. They tracked down the stolen Mustang to a chop shop that seemed to specialize in pilfering pony cars.
The car was stolen sometime last week, and police officers working the case tracked it down to an industrial park in Pinellas, Florida. There they found five late-model Mustangs in various states of disrepair, including the LoJack-equipped car. Police arrested 50 year-old Robert P. Evans and have charged him with two counts of grand theft auto, and of running a chop shop.
The five Mustangs, many of them no more then shells, had all been reported stolen from the surrounding counties during the last two years. In all likelihood, the thieves were stealing cars and selling parts online, though Evans probably wasn’t acting alone. From the looks of it, there isn’t much left to most of these cars, but at least this chop shop was shut down… though there always seems to be another one right around the corner.
