The evolution of the American sports car has taken many twists and turns, and our country’s history is rich with innovative, stylish automobiles with an emphasis on performance. Many great rivalries were born from this,and while some cars rose to prominence, others fell into relative obscurity. Take the battle between the Shelby Cobra and the Chevy Cheetah; while one is a veritable performance icon, only 15 original Cheetahs were ever built.

But the Cheetah has a loyal cult of enthusiasts, many of whom have built their own Cheetahs based on the original blueprints. This video is from the inside of one of those cars as it chases an icon from the same time period, reborn; the 2012 BOSS 302 Mustang.

The track in question is Inde Motorsports Ranch near Wilcox, Arizona, and this video comes from inside of Jim Bertolani’s 400+ horsepower Cheetah. Bertolani is the owner/builder of this particular Cheetah, and he says it is powered by a small-block Chevy with four Weber carburetors.According to the video description the Cheetah “leaps from corner to corner with little effort, using only a fraction of its power.”

And sure enough the little Cheetah is able to leap ahead of the modern Mustang on just about every straight away, due in large part to its might lighter weight. But when it comes to handling, the BOSS 302 steps right back up, passing the Cheetah on the track’s tight turns. The video is over 11-minutes long, but it certainly is a sight to see vintage and modern American sports cars duking it out on the track.
