In 2009, Ford Racing debuted the first of their new-age Cobra Jet Mustangs with rousing success, as John Calvert drove to the Stock Eliminator crown in the cars’ debut at the NHRA Winternationals that year. And the momentum has never stopped.
There have been plenty of class and eliminator wins in subsequent seasons for the Cobra Jet, but it’s been the remarkable performance potential of these factory built machines that have put them on the map as racers have exploited the seemingly limitless combination of the three different CJ releases thus far.
The nines came in short order, the eights weren’t far behind with the release of the supercharged 2010 model, and now, incredibly, the Cobra Jet’s are on the verge of the seven-second zone.
While testing his Cobra Jet – believed to be fitted with Whipple’s 4.0L supercharger this week at the New England Dragway in New Hampshire, Carl Tasca of the legendary Tasca Ford, reeled off an impressive 8.06-second lap at 170.08 MPH. Tasca’s hard-charging CJ rode the last few yards of the racetrack o the rev limiter, making the seven’s a very real possibility.
