You probably know a lot about manual transmissions but how much do you know about Tremec, one of the industry’s leading producers of manual gearboxes? Well, thanks to Tremec’s Fun Facts, you can now know a little bit more about the famous transmission company. While you may not be surprised to find out some of these tidbits of info, some are certain to throw even the most die-hard enthusiast for a loop.
Established in 1964, Tremec has been building quality transmissions for decades. What you may not know, however, is that Tremec really got its foot into the aftermarket when Mustang enthusiasts started using the Tremec TR-3550 in their cars in the 1990s. Ever since, Tremec has been taking the aftermarket by storm, supplying massive amounts of gearboxes to every make and model imaginable.
Among the most popular of transmissions today, are Tremec’s TKO 5-speed, an upgrade from the ever popular Top-Loader 4-speed from the company, and the T-56 Magnum, which is an aftermarket version of the TR-6060 6-speed transmission equipped in the latest factory Vipers, Corvettes, Camaros, SRT-8 Challengers, Pontiac G8 GXPs, Cadillac CTS-Vs and even Shelby GT500s.
Running at full production power, Tremec can manufacture a whopping 300,000 transmissions a year plus thousands of other transmission components, but it’s not just transmissions for cars that Tremec specializes in. When not producing their famous passenger car transmissions, Tremec produces components for other vehicle types, including military vehicles and scooters. On the list of unexpected vehicles are also heavy-duty commercial vehicles that require transmissions with up to 18 forward gears and 2,200ft-lbs of torque. Not a bad range of applications for one transmission company.
While we’re sure there are plenty more interesting tidbits of information that Tremec could tell you about their company we’ll let you get started with these. One last thing you should know – Tremec actually stands for Transmissions and Mechanical Equipment. Bet you didn’t know that!

Tremec’s T-56 Magnum transmission is one of the most popular in the industry with factory-versions of the transmission found in Corvettes, Camaros, Vipers and Shelby GT500s.
