For a lot of people, going around a corner fast is just as fun as going down a dragstrip. The inherent problem with solid axle vehicles under braking is pad knock back. “I don’t care who’s axle it is, if it’s ours or the competition, an axle is going to flex when put under stress on a street car, they are designed that way,” said Jeff Anderson of Moser Engineering.
Continuing Anderson said, “If you have an extremely rigid axle like found in a drag car in a street car, they will break because they cannot flex. Unfortunately with this needed axle flex comes pad knock back, which can lead to a bad brake pedal feel and even brake failure.” The concept of knock back is pretty simple. When you aren’t pressing on your brakes, there is a small amount of distance from the brake pads and the rotor face. When an axle flexes, the rotor in turn pushes back against the pad, pushing the caliper’s piston(s) back into the bore. This means the next time you apply the brakes, it’s going to take more effort (and fluid) to push the pad back against the rotor.
We have been making floater assemblies for dirt track racing and we are now transferring that technology to the street. – Jeff Anderson
A floating hub design separates the hub from the braking system and solid mounts the brake to the axle housing. A hub, that looks similar on the front of a car, captures the axle and wheel assembly. This allows the axle to pass through the center of the brake assembly and will not interfere during deflection. “We have been making floater assemblies for dirt track racing and we are now transferring that technology to the street,” said Anderson.
Currently offered for SSBC and Wilwood brakes, the big brake version will work with 18-inch wheels while Moser also offers a system designed for smaller wheels. The system does require custom axles and rearend housing modifications, or Moser can offer a brand new rearend designed specifically for their floater kit.
Fox Body Rear Suspension
While this product is so new there isn’t much information on it, what we can tell you is Moser has spent two years testing their new Fox body Mustang rear suspension package. Moser wanted to one-up the competition by creating a rear suspension combination that will work well with their Muscle Pak kit along with factory rearends. Keep an eye out for an upcoming feature on this rear suspension.
