While the Coyote engine in the Mustang GT and the GT500’s super car smashing trinity engine tend to get all of the ink these days, we should not forget that the V6 Mustang is also better than it’s ever been. Making over 300 HP, the little six has gone from an also ran, to a real contender on the streets.
Numerous V6 project cars have proven that you can modify a V6 to hang with many of the V8’s. BBK Performance has been a leader is Mustang performance parts since the Fox-body days.
BBK’s long tube headers offer an effective bolt on upgrade for V6 Mustangs. Combined with their catted or off-road X-pipe, they can produce power gains of 12 hp and 11 ft-lbs of torque with the catted x-pipe, and 20 hp, and 18 ft-lbs of torque with the off-road x-pipe. Both of those numbers are to the rear wheels. Worth mentioning as well is these numbers are with the factory stock tune in the car, meaning there’s likely more in the combination should owners have it tuned by a professional.
While this project could be done on the garage floor, it’s going to be much easier to do this installation on a lift. This video from BBK goes through step by step of how to install their V6 Mustang long tube headers, as well as shows you the difference in sound between the two x-pipes with the stock mufflers still installed on the car.
BBK offers these headers in both chrome and ceramic coated finishes, as parts number 1642 and 16420 respectively. Depending on emissions laws and the use of your car, you will also need a BBK short x-pipe to complete this installation, part number 1461 includes high-flow catalytic converters, while 1462 is the off road version.
The V6 Mustang is a great alternative for those who can’t spring for the GT, or need a more economical form of daily transportation. Tell us about your V6 Mustang below, and checkout this install video from BBK.
