The 1995 Cobra R is the stuff of legends. It marked the first time that Ford had put a 351 engine in a Mustang in over 20 years. With just 250 copies built and sold, this car was intended to leave the showroom, be track prepped, and pushed to it’s limits in SCCA showroom stock competition.
With racers in mind, Ford made it mandatory that only those with a valid competition license could purchase these track oriented machines, leaving many buyers and potential collectors looking for a work around.
The 95 Cobra R’s 351W engine was rated at 300 hp, while that seems tame by today’s standards when even a V6 Mustang could beat those numbers, it was around 60 hp better than the top of the line standard consumer Cobra for 1995, which was also a limited production car, with around 5,000 units built that year.
Other features of the ’95 Cobra R included progressive rate springs, the removal of much of the sound deadening material, radio, air conditioning, back seat, and fog lights in the name of weight savings. The ’95 R also saw the installation of a 20 gallon fuel cell to further it’s track prowess, and a heavy duty Tremec 3550 transmission to handle the torque of the 351 engine.
All of the cars came in white, with saddle cloth interior, though we’re sure the budget bucket seats were ditched in favor of more supportive racing buckets for cars that actually saw track duty. HO Fibertrends supplied the dual tier cowl hood to clear the 351 engine, an add on that remains popular on 94-04 Mustangs even today as do the unique for the Cobra R only five-spoke seventeen inch wheels.
While some of these cars saw track duty, and a few saw street duty, we suspect that many were snapped up by savvy collectors who worked their magic on the paperwork, hoping for an investment opportunity.
Currently up for grabs on eBay is a nearly showroom perfect example of the 95 Cobra R, with just 21 miles on it’s odometer. Asking price is $59,990, probably about right to us for a car of this caliber. Check out the photos provided by the seller, and tell us what you’d do with your own low mileage ’95 Cobra R.
