The Somernites Cruise is an event that should be on every gearhead and enthusiasts bucket list. Set in the small eastern Kentucky town of Somerset, Somernites runs one weekend a month from April through October each year. The cruise draws in thousands of cars and spectators from across the country, and takes over the beautiful downtown area.
We’ve got at least three good reasons for Mustang fans to attend the upcoming Somernites cruise on August 24. The first is that the Mustang is the featured car this month. A special area, designated as Mustang Alley is set aside for Mustangs of every year to be on display. Last year 643 Mustangs showed up for the event making it the largest specialty turnout of any other Somernites cruise.
To sweeten the deal this year there’s a Fox-body convertible give-away. The red and black droptop will be raffled at the end of the event on Saturday night, and if you want to win you have to be present with a ticket in town square for the 6:30 drawing. Everyone through the gates on Saturday will receive a ticket, and for every $5 of Somernites merchandise purchased you can get another raffle ticket. It’s free to get into Somernites however, so at the least everyone has one free chance at a car.
There’s also a special, official Somernites raffle car, a ’66 Mustang convertible. This one you have to buy tickets for, and it is sponsored by Alton Blakely Ford, and Coker Tires.
If you can’t make it to Somernites this month, put one on your calendar and make your reservations early. Hotels often fill their registrations early for this event. For more information, visit the Somernites web site.
