Ford set a high bar for itself for the 2015 Mustang, and for good reason. Not many cars make it through 50 continuous years of production, especially sports cars, and the Mustang has become something more than just a car. It’s an icon, one that’s about to get an across-the-board boost in top speeds, thanks to less weight and increasingly refined engines.
In an interview with the 2015 Mustang’s chief designer Dave Pericak, Auto Evolution found out that the 2015 Mustang will get an across-the-board top speed increase. What’s surprising is where the four-cylinder EcoBoost slots in.
As it stands, the 3.7 liter V6 in the 2011+ Mustang was limited to a top speed of just 114 MPH, and going any faster could result in a disastrous exploding driveshaft. The base V6 in the 2015 Mustang will be electronically limited to 121 MPH, a seven MPH increase. The 5.0 V8, meanwhile, gets a 6 MPH increase, from 149 MPH to 155 MPH, on par with competitors like the Chevy Camaro.
The 2.3 liter EcoBoost, meanwhile, will be limited to 121 MPH as well, unless customers order the Track Pack option. This feature will, among other things, increase the allowable top speed by 24 MPH, allowing an EcoBoost Mustang to go as fast as 145 MPH right out of the factory. At just 10 MPH less than the V8, Ford seems to be betting that customers are going to want to tweak and tune EcoBoost engine just as enthusiastically as the V8.
We’re betting they’re right, and the higher top speed will only further promote the idea of the four-cylinder as a performance alternative to the V6.
