In 2011, Ford held a social media contest to solicit names for the upcoming performance package for the Ford Mustang V6, which was sporting a then-new 305 horsepower 3.7 liter V6 engine. After vetting the name with patent lawyers and copyright guardians, the winning name was the “Mayhem” package. The Mayhem package quickly reverted into the Performance Package on later models, but at least Ford gave it a shot.

While we weren’t expecting the return of the SVO badge per se for the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost, there was the hope Ford might attach a cool name to the 21st century pony car. Alas, the Torque Report claims that the EcoBoost-equipped Mustangs won’t have any special trim names or badges for marketing purposes. Boo.

Instead, Ford will rely on Internet vernacular to label a car already widely referred to as the EcoBoost Mustang or Mustang EcoBoost. Just don’t expect these terms to appear in Ford marketing materials, just like Mustang V6 just sort of came into being. The Mustang Mayhem Package quickly reverted back being just the Performance Package, a to-the-point of uninspired name.

It’s a confusing decision if we’re honest, as Ford has been attaching metal-based trim names to most of the rest of its lineup, from the Ford Fiesta to the F-150, which are available in trims like Titanium and Platinum, respectively. But the Mustang EcoBoost will be just that, perhaps only getting a small badge somewhere on the back end. Maybe that’s for the best, but we can’t help but be disappointed there’s not something cooler in the name.
