Superchargers still remain the weapon-of-choice for muscle car owners looking to boost their power numbers. Among supercharger makers, Vortech is a leader in design and making power. They only recently released horsepower numbers for their 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 supercharger kit, which made 605 horsepower and 473 ft-lbs of torque on the engine dyno. Not bad numbers at all.
But really, who has just a supercharger on their car? We already know how well the 5.0 engine responds to a simple exhaust upgrade, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Vortech’s supercharged test car made 577 horsepower at the wheels.
Those are some great numbers considering Vortech’s test car only has a Borla X-pipe and exhaust system. Figuring in a 15% powertrain loss, that means this supercharged Vortech Mustang is making around 640 horsepower at the flywheel. This comes from Vortech’s new V3 S-Trim supercharger with a 3.6 inch pulley. As for torque, the supercharged Mustang 5.0 made 442 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels, which translates to roughly 508 ft-lbs at the flywheel. Even better, these numbers came from that 91 octane swill California (and a few other unlucky states) are stuck with.
It’s hard not to be impressed by these numbers. 600 horsepower with a few basic bolt-ons and a supercharger? This new 5.0 engine is exceeding expectations everywhere it goes. With just a few more modifications (cam swap anyone?) this engine could easily be pushing 700 horsepower…maybe even at the wheels! Vortech just started shipping these superchargers, so make sure you get your order in sooner rather than later.
