Building a 1,000 horsepower car used to be special, and in a way it still is. After all, a 1,000 horsepower…is 1,000 horsepower. Still, there is a special challenge to building a 1,000 horsepower car that is also street legal. We’re talking a full-blown race car that you can drive to and from the track. Such vehicles are few and far between.

But Chris Cruz’s 2011 Mustang GT, built by Evolution Performance, is just such a car. With just over 1,000 rear-wheel horsepower and 1,070 ft-lbs of torque, Cruz managed to take his monster Mustang down the drag strip in 8.99 seconds, breaking into the 8’s for the first time.

With a full interior and a racing weight of 3,900 pounds plus the driver, this is no stripped-down drag car, but a true street car that can be driven to and from the track. If more impressive, Chris made his 8-second pass on the stock (though heavily upgraded) six-speed automatic transmission.

But the real heart of this Mustang is the supercharged 5.0 engine. With a 4.0 liter Whipple “Crusher” twin-screw supercharged cranking air at 24lbs of boost into the engine, this 5.0 engine has had the volume cranked up to 11. Even more impressive though, this run was done with the stock cylinder heads and camshafts. After a series of successively lower and lower 9-second runs, Chris’ Mustang finally broke through to the 8’s with an 8.99 @ 153 mph.
