If there is one vehicle Carroll Shelby is synonymous with, it is the Ford Mustang. Since 1965, Shelby has been turning out faster and faster performance Mustangs, creating a cult of pony cars that are many times more valuable than your plain Jane muscle car. Shelby has dabbled in building other vehicles in the past, including a short stint with Chrysler, but Mustangs remain his bread and butter.
But an interview by Autoblog with Shelby American President John Luft suggests that Shelby is ready to branch out beyond Mustangs again, including developing a new halo car of their own.
According to Luft, Shelby’s future plans include the Mustang, and could potentially include Ford’s new Fusion and Focus models as well. The development of EcoBoost technology will no doubt be pivotal to Shelby’s next generation of vehicles, and with EcoBoost slated to enter all of Ford’s vehicles, Shelby will need to stay on top of this new technology. It will also give those of us wanting a Shelby vehicle something other than a Mustang to choose from.
In fact, Shelby may be working on an all-new, built-from-scratch halo car not unlike the Series 1 from the early 1990’s. Shelby has dabbled with building an in-house supercar for much of the past decade, but it seems as though they are seriously considering making another go at it.
