Horsepower is a lot like money in the sense that you can always use a little more. For the 2015 and-up Ford Mustang EcoBoost and GT models, a little more horsepower and torque is what Ford Performance is offering through warranty and emissions-friendly power packages. With up to three stages of additional performance to choose from, these new packages are a no-brainer for anybody wanting to give their pony “a little more” power.
Though the Mustang GT often steals the spotlight from the EcoBoost model, the performance calibration kit for the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine is arguably the most compelling of the bunch. For $699, this kit will add 70 lb-ft of torque to the EcoBoost engine’s bottom line, giving it a total of 390 lb-ft to play with. You’ll also get an additional 25 horsepower, bringing the grand total to 335; though improvements in the power band include a jump of 100 horsepower at 6,000 RPM. Though we’ve seen EcoBoost kits producing more power, they don’t usually include the factory warranty.
Not be be left out, the Mustang GT comes with three stages of its calibration kit starting at $539 and working up to $2,395. The cheapest kit features a “unique performance calibration” and a high-flow air filter that adds up to 13 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque. The second kit includes a cold air intake, an 87mm throttle body, and an intake adapter from the Shelby GT350. Those upgrades add up-to an extra 21 horsepower and 24 lb-ft over the stock configuration for a price of $949.
The big guns of the group will set you back $2,395 – but adds 37 horsepower, and “an extended powerband.” Torque gains are just 5 ft-lb, but this is because the kt incorporates the parts of the second stage (and also moves the redline up to 7,500 RPM). This brings total horsepower to 472, with peak gains of 60 ponies at the new 7,500 RPM redline.
When installed by a certified Ford technician, it will maintain the vehicle’s warranty. It’s also 50-state emissions legal, so you won’t run afoul of over-zealous hippies or government regulators.
