Few television cop dramas have developed the fanatical following like the show Hawaii 5.0. The 5.0 stands for Hawaii being the 50th state, and followed a set of fictional state police officers as the chased down crime across their tropical paradise. The show was famous for Detective Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord, and his closing line. That would be, “Book ‘em, Danno!” (referring to subordinate officer Danny Williams).
Well Hawaii 5.0 is coming back, though this time the 5.0 stands for something different. The 5.0 Mustang will feature prominently into the show (coming this fall to CBS), and the trailer shows the Mustang showing up in several scenes.
The original Hawaii 5.0 first aired in 1968, and ran for 12 seasons until 1980. As you might imagine, many classic cars from that era were featured in the show. Danny Williams, or “Danno”, even drove a white Mustang for some time. Hawaii 5.0 was nominated for 11 Emmys during its 12 seasons, and managed to take home two of them. Not a bad haul for a cop drama.
The new Hawaii 5.0 will star Alex O’Loughlin as Detective Steve McGarrett and Scott Cann as Danny Williams (who was originally played by James McArthur). While this remake appears to have a bit of a darker tone than the original (which was often tongue in cheek), Danno appears to have kept his taste in cars and appears to own a black Mustang 5.0. We may not care for police dramas, but any show that has a Mustang in it is at least worth checking out once…if just for the car.
