With the new year already underway, Ford has begun prepping for the bi-annual Auto Expo which takes place in Delhi, India.
The company plans to debut the current model-year sixth-gen Mustang at the event, and is hoping to gain a solid interest in the Indian automotive market.
Although the car did debut in North America back in 2014, the latest generation Mustang has taken quite some time to reach enthusiasts overseas. The Mustang has become such an international contender, that as soon as it arrived in Australia, it instantly became sold out for the next entire year.
As hesitant as Ford may be regarding the Indian market, the company has determined that the current success of the Mustang in the international market is proof enough to push forward with the debut. Ford plans to direct-import the Mustang into the Indian market as a complete build unit (CBU), meaning the Mustang will be built in North America to the Indian market’s specifications, including building the vehicle as a right hand drive configuration. As of right now, it’s been highly speculated that Ford plans to offer the Indian spec’d Mustang only in the GT configuration, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
While Ford India has yet to confirm a launch date for the current generation Mustang, the car will still debut at the Auto Expo regardless – looking to make a presence for those in the market for a V8 powered sports car. The success of the GT model will determine if Ford will import additional Mustang models like the EcoBoost and the base V6 in the Indian automotive market.
