One of the key elements to the success of the original Mustang lay in its convertible roof option. Not only was it a fun sports car, but it appealed to a younger generation that wanted to feel the wind in their hair as they screamed down the highway. Yet there is something to be said about the rigidity and sense of security you get from having a hard top. Alas, retractable hardtops are expensive and often reserved for high-end European sports cars. Except in this one, special case.
This video, just uploaded to YouTube a few days ago, shows us a 1967 Mustang dubbed “Poison Ivy”. Besides the ‘sleek’ paint job and big wheels, what really makes this Mustang stand out is the retractable hard top.
Yes, you read that right; a retractable hardtop ’67 Mustang. Believe it or not, Ford actually toyed around with a retractable hardtop option on the ’66 Mustang, though it never went into production. This car, called “Poison Ivy”, due to the color changing green-ish paint, is a unique custom car with no known equal. It is a decked out show car, and according to the video, it has never even seen the road.
Under the hood is a 302 engine mated to a T-5 Heavy Duty five-speed transmission. It has a full “Grab-A-Track” suspension, front and rear, and the drum brakes have been upgraded to disc brakes all the way around. The interior dash has been upgraded with digital gauges and a new sound system. Though the one part of the car we don’t know about (possibly the paint too) is the Lambo doors. It is a bit too Fast and Furious for our taste and just don’t belong on a classic muscle car.
The owner of this car, named Greg according to his website, lives in Canada and seems to have an obsession with Mustangs (and we totally get that). He has also developed a KC Slider trailer, though we’re still stuck on that excellent Mustang. We think it needs to be “broken in”, if you get our drift.
