2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R Gets New Chassis Technology From GT500

2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R Gets New Chassis Technology From GT500

Ford made several small enhancements to the 2019 Shelby GT350 that dramatically improved the car’s handling. Today, Ford announced its more track-focused variant– the GT350R – would be getting some performance parts passed down from the 2020 Shelby GT500 in addition to more color options.

“It’s always been our plan to take the latest innovations from the GT500 program and strategically apply them across the Mustang lineup,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. He added the latest updates keep the performance of the GT350R competitive and at the top of its game.

Enhancing handling and steering responsiveness, Shelby GT350R refinements for 2020 include redesigned front suspension geometry with a redesigned high-trail steering knuckle leveraged from the all-new Shelby GT500.

Among the updates to the 2020 GT350R is a redesigned high-trail steering knuckle from the GT500 that enhances handling and steering response. The GT350R also received a new steering rack and recalibrated electric power steering control for better steering precision and to elevate driver confidence.

To keep the weight low, the GT350R features a rear seat delete and Ford removed the exhaust resonators to save weight, which also resulted in a sharper exhaust tone.

It comes standard with carbon fiber wheels, larger front splitter, and rear wing.

Standing apart from the GT350, the GT350R features distinct design details. Inside are Shelby GT350R badging, high-contrast red stitching, and a D-shaped steering wheel fitted with a red center mark at the top.

Other “R” distinction elements include red-painted brake calipers and red pinstriping at the edges of the optional over-the-top racing stripes.

Regarded as an upgrade from the previous version, the 2020 GT350R received Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, a 12-speaker B&O premium sound system, Cobra Puddle Lamps, and voice-activated navigation.

The standard 2020 Shelby GT350 retains its 2019 updates in addition to some aerodynamic and chassis technology with the latest tire. It also shares Grabber Lime and Twister Orange paint colors with the GT500. Both heritage colors are reminiscent of the 1970s while Iconic Silver and Red Hot Metallic paint offer the GT350 a more traditional look.
