Back in the 1960s, before insurance agents and government regulators caught on, cars like the Shelby GT350 could be rented for a long weekend of track shenanigans. These “Hertz specials” were all painted a special black-and-gold livery, and just 999 of these special Shelbys were sold to rental car agencies across the country. Today, these are real collector items.
Up on eBay right now is a three-car collection including an original, low-mileage 1966 Shelby GT350H, as well as two modern incarnations of the Shelby Hertz, a 2006 coupe and 2007 convertible. All three can be yours for the low price of just $294,800.
Seems like a lot of money, until you consider that the ‘66 Shelby GT350H is worth at least $200,000 alone. Equipped with a 289 V8 and a C4 automatic transmission, this particular Shelby has racked up just over 40,000 miles in almost 50 years of service. It’s a well-kept time capsule, completely documented and restored to era specific conditions. They don’t come much cleaner than this.
But that’s not all! This auction also includes a 40th anniversary edition of the 2006 Shelby GT500H, a special Hertz edition of the Shelby Mustang that Ford and Hertz leased for a few years in the mid-2000s. A 2007 Shelby GT500H convertible is also included in the auction, and combined with the coupe these two newer Shelbys have even fewer miles than the original.
While the almost $300,000 price tag is nothing to scoff at, getting three Hertz Shelbys for that price almost seems like a bargain. Would you make room in your dream garage for one of these rental warriors?
